THE SPRINT YEARS - 2000

Jockeying for Middleswarth for the second year, Todd roared into the 2000 season ready to seize his first ever career sprint car win. And seize he did on April 28th at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg.

Having started fourth in the track's 25-lap sprint car feature, he had already motored up to third by the completion of the races first circuit, running behind leader Mike Erdley of Herndon and Zemco pilot Skip Jackson. The front trio ran under a blanket for almost the first half of the event, staging a crowd pleasing three-way battle for the lead while distancing themselves from the rest of the pack. Running in third, Todd took evasive action to avoid being taken out of the race on lap-11 as Jackson made a bid for the top spot only to loop his black racer in turn two, bringing out the races only caution flag. After bobbling slightly and allowing the leader to slip away when green reappeared, Todd quickly reeled in front runner Erdley to make his race winning pass deep in turn three and take the halfway sign while in control of the field. With seven to go, Todd threaded his way through traffic carefully while running both sides of the speedway, allowing both Erdley and Rahmer to close slightly late in the race. With three to go, he put a risky flyer on Selinsgrove pilot Troy Whitesel to seal up the initial victory of his sprint car career, which came by a convincing three second margin over Erdley. Seven-time 2000 winner Rahmer finished third, followed by Johnny Mackison Jr. and Dave Haight.

Having gotten his first checkered flag, the win was indeed the realization of a lifelong dream for 30-year-old Todd who has always idolized the great Bobby Allen. He worked his way up from the bottom to get where he is today and he has the utmost respect for his current surroundings.

From the Grove on April 28th to Selinsgrove a month later on May 28th, Todd returned to victory lane for a second glorious time in 2000. Whether it stemmed from luck, fate, skill or just plain flat out hard, foot-to-the-floor racing, it seemed Todd was beginning to like racing his sprint car on the 28th of the month. He started on the pole in the 25-lap sprint car feature and immediately served notice that he was the driver to beat by opening up a commanding lead over third starter Fred Rahmer by the completion of the races first circuit. He was spared any impending challenges by Rahmer when the Salfordville driver slowed with a right rear flat tire on the Hamilton 77 with four laps down. Eighth starter Mike Erdley motored up to second when green reappeared but it was all Todd Hestor on the restart and over the entire distance. The eventual winner maintained a solid, lengthy lead throughout, even while holding off the challenges of Erdley on ensuing restarts, which came on laps 13 and 19 respectively. Todd maintained his stronghold on the lead late in the event despite a dislodged front wing to pick up the win by a half straightaway over Erdley, Shawn Keen and teammate Kauffman. By virtue of his heat win earlier in the night in a time of 2:17.50 seconds, Todd set a new eight-lap track record. Ironically, each time Todd has won a feature event, Erdley has been runner up and even more ironic is the fact that when Erdley got his first career win at Selinsgrove in 1999, Todd followed him to the line in second spot.

Todd ended the 2000 season with several more very strong runs. He nearly won his first feature at Port Royal back in April only to suffer frontend suspension problems after leading the last half of the race. Lance Dewease slipped by with two to go and forced Todd to finish second. Todd's last race of the season was in October at Delaware International where he led half of the feature before crossing the line in third at the finish.

All told, 2000 ended with Todd having scored 32 top-ten finishes, 14 of which were top-fives, out of the 66 events he entered at six different speedways. Two of those finishes were of course the wins and three of them were runnerups with a pair having come at Port and the other occurring in the Selinsgrove National Open in September.

Todd also recorded a pair of quick times on the season, one of which was over the All Stars during Western PA Speedweek at Port Royal in June. The other occurred in Lincoln's season ending Kenny Weld Memorial. He closed out the season with a much improved showing in the season point standings having notched a highly respectable fifth at Selinsgrove, seventh at Port Royal and an impressive ninth at Williams Grove.
